one step closer
a note from Pastor Ernie
Hello Wesley,
I have begun thinking about our next series at Wesley, a series about prophesies concerning Jesus as the Messiah. There are many! The revelation of His purpose begins in the Old Testament, in fact it begins at creation. Jesus comes to earth and as an adult starts walking around doing all these out of the world miracles. People start guessing he is the Christ and He immediately tells them not to say anything. And
He does this consistently.

He is about ready to cast demons out of a man and the demon cries out “What have you to do with us Jesus?” The demons knew He was the Messiah and He orders them to be quiet. I have been wondering why the silence? Why not a proclamation, a parade, a big show? Why all the guessing and hidden meaning in the stories He told?

It seems there was a “right time” that was set aside. And it seems pretty clear that even those who called Jesus Messiah had no idea how the cross was connected. No one was prepared to believe that the cross was the New King’s throne. They connected the miracles, healing, walking on water, calming the storm, calling out the demons, but no one connected the cross with the Messiah. It is not until after the resurrection and the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost that the cross begins to unveil the depth of God’s mercy and forgiveness. The cross helps us see just how far God will go to bring us home.

The Old Testament prophets did talk about this, though I am not sure they actually knew what they were saying. It is going to be a great study as we unveil the plan created before the world was made.

I love being your pastor,

Ernie

Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar and is a season of 40 days of fasting, confession and forgiveness. The ashes we use come from the palms of the palm branches the Palm Sunday of the previous year and remind us that the celebration of Palm Sunday leads to the crucifixion on Good Friday.

For centuries this was primarily a Catholic tradition that a few protestant denominations celebrate, among them some Methodist churches. Ashes have been symbolic of seasons of grief and repentance for God’s people all the way back to the Old and New Testaments. God’s people would cover their heads in ashes when grieving for a loved one. Priests threw ashes on themselves and the people during ceremonies of repentance. The phrase sackcloth and ashes appears numerous times in the scriptures.

During this season of Lent, we will be remembering brothers and sisters of faith in Cuba who are undergoing extraordinary persecution, even basic needs are unavailable. On
Good Friday, we will take a special offering to send medicines to Cuba. We will also be hosting the 25 th anniversary of the Cuba / Florida covenant on March 25th and everyone is welcome to attend.

CUBA MINISTRY

methodists united in prayer

2023-25th Anniversary
Sister Churches establish a bond of relationship and prayer with one another, brought together by their shared faith in Jesus Christ. Occasional mission trips are taken to Cuba to meet the church pastors and members, form relationships, and deliver much needed medicine and supplies. Through this relationship and prayer, many churches are led to take this to the next level by providing clean water systems, helping put on marriage or children’s ministries, doing construction projects, or a variety of other ministry opportunities. Each relationship is unique and is molded by God, however, the primary focus is mutual prayer and relationship.

MEDIA LUNA METHODIST CHURCH IS THE SISTER CHURCH OF WESLEY MUMC
Niquero Methodist Church (in the Granma province) started sending members (missionaries) to a town about 15 miles away to start a house church. In the year 2000, because of the great travel difficulties to get to the mission, a small house in Media Luna was purchased with a donation from Bayshore UMC. In the 2003 Annual Conference, Media Luna was appointed an official church of the Methodist Church in Cuba.

After several pastoral changes, in the 2016 Annual Conference, Misleidis Mendoza was appointed pastor of Media Luna Church. Pastora Misleydis and her husband have no children; they have 3 nieces and nephews whom they love as their own. Currently the church has about 70 members. Although all of those who come to their church services tithe faithfully, their income is very meager. They are faithful warriors in prayer and fasting for our Pastor, his family and all our members.

The Covid pandemic has hit Cuba very severely. The scarcity of food and medicines and the inability of the Cuba ministry to travel there, as before, to take resources, has made the lives of our Cuban brothers and sisters very tenuous. There were, and still are, many deaths and illnesses due to Covid and Dengue fever. Believers continue to gather, wherever possible, in families and small groups to worship and cry out to God.
God Almighty has blessed the Cuba ministry with opportunities to send prescription and generic drugs to the whole Island in most economical and effective ways with donations from loving, generous hearts The situation of most of those living in Cuba continues to be very critical. Wesley Church will be encouraging sacrificial giving during Lent from the ministries of the Church as well as the general congregation for the benefit of the Cuba Ministry to purchase medicines.

Coffee with Ernie
Pastor Ernie is continuing his series "Finding Jesus in the Old Testament". This is a not to be missed study focusing on a spiritual approach to the Old Testament that needs to be watched and shared with neighbors and friends! Join us every Tuesday morning at 7:30 am on Facebook or you can watch it later as well.

"One of the first spiritual lessons we learn from Moses in the Old testament is, if there is something holding you back, turn and face it. Not in your own strength, but in God's strength. Trust God and God will bring you victory."
