PASTOR'S NOTES

Hello Wesley,

I have been listening through the Old Testament in preparation for my Tuesday morning coffee time and it has been really enlightening. I am on my second time through now (give me a couple of weeks with Covid and I drive everyone nuts with the things I am learning). If you have not yet tuned into the Tuesday morning coffee time, it is well worth it. You can join via facebook, you tube, or the website and you do not have to watch it live as it is recorded. I usually come on live around 7:30 am.

I just finished Esther for the second time through listening and I have to say I am struck by the incredible brutality of the Old Testament people. Esther asks Xerxes to have the sons of Hamon impaled and put on display. I have spent some time trying to wrap my head around the brutality and realized this week that I was taking a morally superior ground by looking down upon the social construct of the Old Testament middle east. That leads me to the thought I would like to share.

One of the things I feel is happening today is elements of society are attempting to take the moral high ground over other groups and contemporary society over historical cultures. It is unlikely this will end well. Any people that take the moral high ground through condemnation of other groups tends to have their own words thrown back at them. And I am unsure that we have really progressed all that much spiritually. So there must be a point I have been missing and it dawned on me: holiness.

God is Holy and he seeks His people to be Holy. Personal holiness comes through learning and application of Godly principles and disciplines. Social holiness, an entire society being holy, has been a grand endeavor of entire revolutions over the centuries, and though many have started on the purer road to higher ground, it seems all fall into the same pattern of disintegrating into social corruption.

This leads me to again say what I have been saying for several years now. I am all I can handle. The brutality I see in the Old Testament was often COMMANDED BY GOD as He sought holiness from his people. The more we fight against God, the more brutal we become toward one another. Holiness requires purification and it seems that can be brutal at times. Yikes. More will follow as I continue preparing for Tuesday mornings. For now suffice it to say be careful about taking the moral high ground.

I love being your pastor.

Ernie
