Quote of the Week

Fourth Week of Advent
Fourth Sunday of Advent - - 'Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.'
Matthew 1:23

Pastor's Notes to Wesley

I have been reading a book by Antonin Scalia on faith. It is a collection of briefs and lectures that he gave over the years. One of the lectures was titled, “Absolute Standards of Conduct.” This was a brief word presented at the Annual Days of Remembrance that commemorates victims of the holocaust. He said, “the holocaust should remind us that even the most sophisticated civilizations are capable of unimaginable evil.” And this is still true today. History and our memory of historic events, even evil ones and maybe especially those, are a gift given to us to guide us into a less evil future. If we fail to remember, we doom ourselves to repeat the evils of the past.

The birth of Christ was accompanied by an unspeakable evil. Herod decreed the death of all male children under two. Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt, oddly the place of Israel’s enslavement. Their return to Nazareth a few years later followed the same path Israel walked into freedom from Egypt. This Christmas, it would be good for us to remember the price God and God’s people paid for us to have a Messiah. Each nativity we see, is an historic remembrance of a very real event. Thank you Jesus!
I love being your pastor,
Ernie
