Quote of the Week

Memorial Day
For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made mortal their patriotism and their virtue." - - James A. Garfield

Pastor's Notes to Wesley
Hello Wesley,

We approach Memorial Day and remember those who gave their lives so we can live as free people. I did not come from a military family. I have not lost someone I love in a war or military action, and so my approach to Memorial Day used to be almost as an observer of how others were feeling. I am proud of those who have served and grieve with those families who have experienced loss. I have often wished I had served and even once tried to become a chaplain, but alas I was too old.

We are living in a precarious time, things not experienced as a nation before. It would
be wise for use to remember the sovereignty of God through all of history. So many
things today are politicized immediately. I went to Home Depot and left my mask in the
car. While in line to get in, someone pointed at me and said “Trump lover.” At first, it
was a complete disconnect but then I realized even wearing or not wearing a mask had
been politicized. So odd. Why are we moving toward sides, like drawing battle lines on
our own land, as if preparing for another civil war?

On a day when we remember those who died so we could be “One Nation Under God”, we should be more willing to stand for “God” and for “one”. When Jesus prayed for future believers in John 17, He prayed that we would be one, united. And yet, the divisions have infiltrated the church too.

So let this be our prayer today - -
“Lord, help us to be of one mind in humility to Your Spirit. Allow your Holy Spirit to seep into our inner places and remind us of the sacrifice You made so that we might be united as your people. Memorial Day is a day to remember sacrifice for purpose, for freedom. So, as we remember those who have fallen, let us also we remember Your death on the cross to set us free from sin. Help us to be single minded in our praise and thanks for what You did. Amen..

I love being your pastor,
Pastor Ernie

Thoughts for the Day

Memorial Day 1945
On May 30, 1945, the United States celebrated a Memorial Day full of conflicting emotions. The euphoria over the recently declared Allied victory in Europe brought hope to this war-beleaguered nation. There was also optimism that the war in Japan was winding down, bringing an end to WWII. See headlines in the Fort Lauderdale Daily News:

As we draw gradually toward an end of the Shepherding Program, it has been a blessing and very rewarding to talk with so many people who need our love and contact during these times of distress and loneliness.

During the callings, there has been some great stories of love, prayers, and just connecting with each other. All receivers of calls have been grateful that someone from the church has touch their hearts.

Below are responses from your Shepherds:

“For me, I will stay in touch with everyone until we are back to a bit more 'normal' time but for now, really enjoy contacting everyone”.

“I do not call every week since sometimes all those calls can be annoying. I send out individual emails and personal cards..snail mail”.

“Have heard back from some thanking me for staying in touch. I love writing out the cards, making them personal for each individual”.

“So far, all are doing well, so they say. They all have my contact information and know they can call me anytime for any reason”.

“Unless requested otherwise, I think maybe two more weeks. I know that I have some people who really enjoy the calls, so will definitely keep in touch with them”.

“They have no one else to talk to. That is sad. Then there is another lady, well, we talk to each other on a regular basis”.

“For me it's been a blessing to take a couple hours away from the me things and reach out to others each week. I'll continue as long as needed.
Or until the people on my list put me on their call blocking list”.

“I think the active folks on my list probably don’t need calls for much longer. But others on my list that are shut ins should continue with calls”.

I (Tom Edwards) love the one about calling until they call block me!!!! All the Shepherds have made the world a LOT better for being there. So as of June 1st, we will not be out of the business but focus our efforts on those needing our assistance and support. This has been a true labor of love for everyone involved from making calls to Road Runners, Mask Makers and Pray Teams. Please remember if you change your phone numbers, email addresses, or other information contact the church office so we can stay in touch.
