Pastor's Notes to Wesley

Hello Wesley,

“You know what it is about someone who is a friend? They do something.” Love Does.

For the best part of my life, I have done things for people, mostly strangers but not all. I have probably said, “I am here for you” more than a thousand times and shown up for people often. Showing up makes the biggest impact. Lots of people are talking friends, very few have been show up friends. In Romans 13, Paul encourages the church to “be devoted to one another.” I am pretty sure he did not mean for us to tell each other how much we care and then not show up when someone needed us.

I get a sense that for too long church has been primarily about listening to sermons and having great music. Recently our fundamental responsibility as a fellowship of believers, our “showing up,” has been challenged. We no longer visit each other in the hospital as only one visitor at a time applies. We hear about a long-time friend going through trouble and think about what can we do, deciding there really is not very much we have to offer.

Pot luck suppers are being frowned upon, even showing up to a live worship service is really not all that necessary because we can sit home and have the music and sermon piped to us through Facebook or YouTube. But for the fellowship of believers, there is an inescapable reality that only can be realized by showing up for one another. Some of that showing up happens on Sundays, especially if we have been coming for years and seeing one another over and over, even more so if we have served in ministry together, or gone through a struggle, or grieved together. When we live life together, nothing can stop us from showing up.

I encourage you to be a show up friend, a genuine fellowship of believers.

I love being your pastor,
Ernie

A Call to Action for the People of Cuba

In the last few days, we have witnessed in shock and despair the violence against peaceful protesters that erupted following the President of Cuba’s call “to defend the Cuban Revolution from ideological subversion.” Attacks on unarmed civilians including children and elderly people have led to many deaths while hundreds have been taken into undisclosed locations after being beaten and shot at.
Methodists United in Prayer echoes the words of the Methodist Church in Cuba and condemns all violence against the people of Cuba. Furthermore, we call our churches in Florida and across our nation to:
  1. FAST and PRAY for the people of Cuba. “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?” – Isaiah 58:6
  2. Lift up a SHARED PRAYER during Sunday worship for the people of Cuba. “Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses.” – Psalm 107:2
  3. GIVE towards relief for the people of Cuba through the Methodist Church in Cuba. “But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” – 1 John 3:17
  4. Send LETTERS to our nation’s leaders: the President, the Senate and the House of Representatives. “Save, Lord! May the King answer us when we call.” – Psalm 20:9
This Call to Action from Methodists United in Prayer has been endorsed by:
Bishop Ken Carter, The Florida Conference of The UMC & Bishop Ricardo Pereira, Methodist Church in Cuba
