Pastor's Notes to Wesley

Hello Wesley,
“I think sometimes God uses the inexplicable events in our lives to point us toward Him. We get to decide each time whether we will lean in toward what is unfolding and say yes, or back away. The folks who were following Jesus in Galilee got to decide the same thing each day because there was no road map, no program, and no certainty. All they had was this person, an idea, and an invitation to come and see.” Love Does

In my lifetime I cannot even remember how many different Bible studies I have taught. I am approaching 5000 sermons. That is a whole lot of me talking, thinking, meditating, communing, preparing. I spent an average of 30 hours a week getting ready for every sermon. If I was smart enough in my planning, my studies paralleled my sermons and did not have more than one preparation. Unfortunately, I was not really all that smart and sometimes had three or four different preps a week.
I had a very close friend in my church in Ocoee who took every one of my classes. She said she loved my teaching. After years of listening, she decided it was time to lead a group herself and she did that faithfully for years. As I was preparing to move to Tampa, she came to me and said she was done taking classes and done teaching. These passive exercises were no longer helping her faith. She had grown stale. I told her not to take another class I taught and not to teach another class. There was no more she needed to know. She knew enough and had made the mistake of believing her faith journey was about knowledge. It was time for her to put her faith to action. She needed to “Just Do Something.”

We are called to gain wisdom and knowledge in our journey toward Christ but our following cannot merely be a learning exercise. At some point LOVE HAS TO ACT or it goes stale. Perhaps we should start calling our groups Bible Living rather than Bible Study. Perhaps each person should give a report not on what they learned this week but on what they did. I have become convinced that a home-made bowl of macaroni and cheese for a neighbor who is hurting offers them more of God than 100 hours of study.
I have decided I want to become an inexplicable event in the lives of other people. How about you? JUST DO SOMETHING!

I love being your pastor,
Ernie
