Pastor's Notes to Wesley
|
|
|
This weekend we will remember those who gave their lives for the love of country. We sometimes get patriotism and faith intertwined and rightfully so. Faith is the same all in as patriotism. If you love your country, nothing gets in the way of your serving. If your faith is strong in the Lord, it is unto death. For the Hebrew people, faith and patriotism were so intertwined, they became inseparable. As Joshua was leading God’s people to the promised land, they had to occupy territory that others called home. People got displaced and fought tenaciously to hold on. They all had their own sense of patriotism. Back a badger into a corner and see just how ferocious creatures become when home is threatened.

One of my favorite verses in this story is Joshua 1:7 “Be strong and very courageous.” So I am not just to have courage, I am to have a lot of courage. Then in verse 9 God gives Joshua the promise he needs, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

And that is my prayer for you, know the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
