Talking Points for the United Methodist Church
|
|
Since the close of the contentious 2019 special General Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, United Methodists from across the theological spectrum set to work crafting plans to resolve the bitter dispute over the denomination’s sexual ethics, teachings on marriage, and ordination standards. The following points are as we understand them and will be put forward in 2020:
|
- Differences in scriptural interpretation, theology and practice have pushed the church to the place where there will be a separation this year.
- According to the separation documents presented to us, we do not know what will actually happen until the general conference being held this May.
- According to the preliminary separation plans, Wesley members will need to vote to remain a traditional Methodist church.
- The current plan allows us to stay on the property and worship together as we have for decades, regardless of the vote.
- The proposed plan is the best means to resolve our differences, allowing us to remain true to our theological understanding while recognizing the dignity, equality, integrity, and respect of every person.

News from the Eberhards

Dear family and friends, Some of you may remember how finding the appropriate music style was a big breakthrough many years ago during our time with the Mamaindê . Well, this year we discovered that the story of that music has come full circle. God is using it to speak to them once more, and in a very powerful way. Some 15 years ago, while we still lived in the Mamaindê village of Capitão Pedro, the youth there had lost all interest in their traditional music genre. They only wanted to listen to “western” music. After staying up all one night, I (Dave) translated 16 new Mamaindê worship tunes - western tunes but with lyrics translated from Portuguese to Mamaindê . The songs were an instant hit and have been sung faithfully since. Fast forward to the present...Click Here to read more.

Thank you all for your investment in our lives, both past and present, whether it’s continuing to remember the Mamaindê or to say a prayer for our current daily activities. We are grateful to you. And we are grateful to the One whose resurrection we will celebrate soon. Dave and Julie Eberhard
