Salt comes from the Latin term "salarium" which was the name for a soldier's pay in the army of ancient Rome. The pay included a ration of salt, which was of high value because of it's nutritional value, medical usage, and it was used as a medium for exchange. This is where we get the saying when describing good people as the "salt of the earth" and "worth your salt." This Sunday, Mr Tom will pass a 'salty' lesson to the children to be both the 'salt of the earth' and 'worth their salt'.

I am originally from Dayton, Ohio.
|
Basically, I was a church kid, but that doesn't mean I was always a Christian. My Dad died when I was ten. With just Mom and me, the church youth group became my "family." Like a lot of kids about 18 years old, I went through a period of searching. The church I grew up in was big – something like 3000 members.
|
The church’s Youth group was also big in the 60's - maybe 100 kids on Sunday night. But not everyone was friendly to me until one day a girl at work asked me, "Why don't you try my church?". North Riverdale Grace Brethren Church was different from Shiloh Congregational Church. They taught and believed the Bible in a way I had not heard of before. One night after youth group, the leader cornered me alone, asking if I had ever accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior. I had never heard this before. He finally led me in what is often called the prayer of salvation. I went into the prayer, not being very sure about it because it was all new stuff to me. But halfway into the prayer, I remember deciding to really mean it.

And there is more, so if you want to find out how Jeff really meant it, link on Jeff Davis.

The Cornerstone Wonder Walk is coming up March 7th at 8 am at Hyde Park UMC. It's a beautiful walk down Bayshore Blvd. to raise money to provide a safe place for children to learn and grow in Tampa's inner city. If you can't walk or run, please support a walker with your donations.

Our very own Steve Olsen has been collecting food donations at Ascensus for a while now, so we invited Ascensus to come here and pack. They took us up on that last week, and we had Steve, Daniel and Hilary come and help. We were able to prep and pack for 2 weeks. We shared a lot of laughs and it’s always great to share the mission with others and have them see the true impact of their efforts. Check out the group photo on Facebook. Click on Facebook Photo

February starts the 'Have a heart, grab a heart' month along with Bridges. Last year
|
was really fun and hugely successful…we’ll keep you posted during the month about what we’re collecting. For those that have been asking here are a few things we are in need of:
|
- Jif to go peanut butter cups – 1.5 oz.
- Juice pouches or boxes
- Granola Bars – kid friendly flavors
We always value your prayers for the pack a sack children, their families, the admin staff at these schools. It’s been a difficult school year, so prayers are always appreciated.
|
If you have any questions about Pack a Sack or purchasing items, you can always ask me at church on Sunday or feel free to call me Jamie Wright @ 813/967-3800 or contact Shaun Black.
