PASTOR'S NOTES
Hello Wesley,
We are coming to the conclusion of our study of Corinthians so I thought a summary would help us remember the key learning.
Corinthians is a troubled church that has adopted cultural norms as Godly. In the first letter, Paul confronts these ungodly characteristics and chapter after chapter is a rebuke for division, sexual immorality, a weak view of marriage and a general childish elevated view of self. Paul’s consistent response is to take the people to what should be rather than what is. He challenges people to become Godly, trust the Holy Spirit, be humble, see the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit, examine your souls, be content, have faith, have hope, and have love. Paul writes the letter with a sense of urgency and frustration because people have already said he has no authority to teach them.
The second letter is a completely different tone. A year or two has passed and Paul has had time to reflect on his purpose and decided to focus on those who will listen. He chooses to influence the one person wanting to mature in faith and simply allow the other 99 to grumble. The second letter to the Corinthians is filled with tremendous spiritual growth verses. Nearly all of the growth principles have one thing in common: know we are supposed to share with others what we have learned so that they can grow in faith. When we receive from God as a sponge wanting simply to absorb, we simply act spiritually immature and the growth principle is we need to learn to allow God to squeeze us, to use us for His glory. Many times that squeezing takes the form of trouble or trials in life.
As long as a church simply wants to absorb, it restricts its effectiveness for the kingdom. Remember, God’s resources for real spiritual growth are unlimited. There is always more.
I love being your pastor.
Ernie
